    Hey..what do you do when your students have a really convincing, sad story about why they can't turn in an assignment on time?

    that's tough.

    I mean...things happen, you know? But it's amazing how often those things happen the week that the paper is due.

    I know, right? I guess it is POSSIBLE that everyone's great aunt has surgery that week...but kind of unlikely.

    Well...I look really sad. Then I sigh really deeply...

    Uh-huh...

    Then I say (in a really sympathetic voice), "Well..Bummmmer!"

    That way, they know I care. and it breaks my heart...but I'm not gonna do a damn thing about it!
