    Fun fact: Originally, broom riding, pole riding and hobby horses were part of ancient pagan animal dances.

    Later on, followers of the Way (Gnosticism, Sufism, Cabala, etc...) traveled as Troubadours, riding their brooms and hobby horses into town and telling Truth in the form of jokes, love poems, and love songs to hide what they were doing from the totalitarian authorities that sought to trample out anything that didn't match their particular set of dogmas.

    The broom itself was a symbol meaning something else, as well as "flying" which was ecstatic and esoteric exploration of the Divine. So, "flying on a broom" was in itself a secret code.

    After a while, the Inquisition caught up with them, and the "witches flying on brooms" became a stigma for anyone who didn't follow the control scheme.
