The Philosophers' Dinner Party Part One

    All of the great philosophers of history are gathered at one dinner party, and expound their ideas with reference to a spoon. This first part deals with Socrates and the Pre-Socratics. It's my attempt at 'Sophie's World', only far, far sillier.

    What is a spoon?

    SOCRATES

    This is.

    That is just an example of a spoon, but what is it to be a spoon in general?

    THALES OF MILETUS

    Like all things, it's something made of water!

    No! Like all things, it's something made of air!

    FIRE! IT'S MADE OF FIRE! HA HA HAAA!

    HERACLITUS OF EPHESUS

    Actually, it's made up of lots of tiny things called atoms.

    AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAA!

    PROTAGORAS

    I don't really know what a spoon is. It's all relative, I guess.

    This is all very interesting, but I don't suppose someone could pass me the spoon any time soon?
