Anti-anti-realism
  • Description

A pretty obscure one this, I'm afraid. Look up Don Cupitt if you don't know him (which you probably don't). An interesting thinker - an ordained Christian minister, but basically an atheist.

Reverend, may I ask you a question?

    Of course.

Do you believe in the virgin birth?

    Yes, I most certainly do...

...in one sense. As a guiding myth by which we can live our lives, a religious doctrine to be understood in practical terms.

    What about the resurrection?

    Absolutely!

In the sense that it's a convenient cultural fiction that expresses a profound spiritual metaphor. In *that* sense I believe in it.

Do you even believe in God?

    I sure do!

In the sense in which He's an ethical ideal and a product of our improvised human knowledge.

You're just doing this for the free house, aren't you?

    No, no, not at all!

But in a more accurate sense, yes.
