ExpandThis shape (left) is the best for making rocky surfaces. Mask it in black and use the black shape to make a solid "rocky-looking" landscape. Then invert the shape and use the new white shape, on low opacity (5-10), to give structure to your rocky landscape,
as seen here below.
A mountain is made in much the same way, this one (left) is made from these shapes (right), that are masked out of the original shape as shown here.
