Ol' Man River
  • Description

“Greetings from Memphis...home of the blues blub blub blub”

As some of you know, i live in Memphis, Tennessee. The Mississippi River, which is normally 1/2 mile wide here, is now about 3 miles across. It’s already more than 47.5 feet deep; it hasn’t been more than 40 feet deep since the devastating flood of 1937. And yes! there are waves lapping at the foot of Beale Street—birthplace of the blues, sweet baby:

Around 1400 residences are expected to be underwater this week. Shelters have been opened for evacuees, already harboring hundreds of people & their pets. In addition, county workers have rescued 65 dogs, 15 puppies, 18 cats, & 2 ducks(!) from the flooding rivers. (We Memphians are famous for our love of ducks, with or without sauce l’orange.)

The grey curves in the upper part of my strip represent the Hernando de Soto Bridge, a Memphis landmark that connects us with Arkansas. Arkansas is important because that’s where the dog race track is.

So far, the levees here are holding. Officials say my neighborhood will not flood, nor lose power or water. But if the river goes above 50 feet, please start worrying about me...blub blub blub....

This strip is a reply to Thin Man #9, Fire!, Thin Man Valentine, Thin Man Carved in stone

Hope things are getting better in Memphis. We just narrowly escaped the damage from last year's Nashville flood, but some folks just down the block from us were not so fortunate.

I hope the levees hold out Blue! I've heard it might crest at 60 or higher, so I'm a little worried. I have a friend in Nashville, and I know how bad things got there last year, wouldn't wish that on anyone!

    Stay Safe Blue!

Great to see you back BSM!!!!!

Put on my blue suede shoes
    And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy -- won't you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

    Then I'm walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
    Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel
