Description
Most Kanji read in Japanese has at least two readings. One is used for the basic word that the kanji depicts; however in this case 月depicts two basic meanings. The first is つき - tsuki - 'moon', the second がつ - gatsu - 'month'
This strip is a reply to Kanji Spirit (Seishin)
The second is a phonetic sound usually used when it is combined with other kanji.
一か月 - ikka(getsu) - one month
The hard part is figuring out what reading to assign the kanji when it is combined with other kanji as there is often more than one phonetic sound. And sometimes the original sound is combined with other kanji...
一月 - ichi(gatsu) - first moon or January
Sorry the translation in the strip is wrong;-(
一か月 does read ikka(getsu) but this doesn't mean 'January' it means 'one month'...
