Breaking News?
  • Description

I've reached the point where it's almost impossible for me to watch more than twenty minutes of national "news" on television before taking a page out of The King's playbook. Indeed, aside from DVDs, I rarely switch the bloody thing on anymore. Some might say that it's the result of age, growing cynicism, apathy, or an equal measure of all three, but I suspect that it's something deeper, more widespread and systemic that's beyond my meager powers of observation.

(...I'll give you a moment to say "well duh!" before moving on with this rant)

Television use to inform, now it just distracts. There were times (...really, I swear!) when it provided genuine entertainment, but now those moments are becoming more and more rare. Repetition and mediocrity have eclipsed this medium that once held so much promise.

So am I prepared to give it all up and cancel my cable subscription? No, of course not. There are a few dwindling rays of hope in the vastness of this media wasteland. Check out (...if your provider has them, that is) Current TV and Free Speech Television for some consistently good viewing. And, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm hopelessly addicted to the Discovery and History channels...dammit.

Yes, I agree this is an old argument. But on occasion some old coot like me has to raise his fist to the heavens and grumble.
