Millions of people around the world consider NASCAR to be a "sport." The rest of us consider the idea of a bunch of fast, brightly painted, cars driven by ill-tempered, narcissistic drivers turning left over and over around a race track until a winner is determined to be just a little bit stupid (...and more than a little bit boring).
Two things that each camp can agree on however is that, 1) drinking massive amounts of alcohol before, during, and after a race makes even the most dull event more entertaining. And 2) the crashes are the most interesting thing about the whole spectacle.
The average race lasts about two or three hours depending on the event (...and how much time has been allotted for coverage by the broadcast networks). At the end of the day, during sports segment of the local evening news, or on the various cable networks (ESPN, CNN, Fox, etc.), the whole race is summerized into about sixty seconds at most. If at any point there was an accident, no matter how minor, it will almost always be the lead.
Questioning the validity of NASCAR is something I hear a lot in the circles that I travel in, and the idea of the television responding honestly to the viewer (...a concept that is kind of a novelty in the USofA I must admit) is kind of interesting.
