Description
My wife has this idea that I'd like "American Idol" if I would just sit down and watch a full episode without making some sort of negative or insulting remark. Truth is, over the shows seven or so years on the air here in the states* I've sampled a few episodes and have come away from the experience with the following opinion: it is essentially an over hyped version of a bowling alley karaoke bar. The contestants, while undeniably talented vocally, earn their "fame" by riding the coat tails of other, more creative people who have earned the title of Artist (...with a big capital "A")**.
AI is not so much entertainment as it is a giant waste of time (...and therefore a grave threat to national security), as are most variants of the "Reality/Game Show" format that have taken the world into their clutches over the past decade or so.
Which brings me, in a round about way I admit, to the subject of this strip: "Deal Or No Deal."
I challenge you, dear reader, to find something, anything, about this thief of precious brain cells that is either socially or morally redeemable***. Watching an hour of this drivel is enough to make me yearn for the dulcet tones of a "Very Special Edition" of The Jerry Springer Show.
So when I learned recently that a two hour episode was planned, I wondered what we as a race had done to anger our creator(s) so completely.
*In the interest of full disclosure, I've never seen "Pop Idol" or any of the various clones that have spawned themselves around the globe.
**Yes, I know that a few former participants have gone on to have very successful careers on Broadway, Hollywood, and in the music industry. I have nothing but respect for them because they've managed, through hard work, of their very real talents.
***And, before anyone says anything, the models don't count.
