Future ideas and tips - Tell us about what you think Stripgenerator needs in the future

NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | author: Zigmund | 28.09.2007 10:19

i need to debate some things with all of you, because i need different oppinions.

there are two major functions which could be included in Strip Generator. first would be importing bitmap images (any kind) and the secound would be drawing with the mouse (as in painter).

now, do you think these two functions would destroy what strip generator had been trying to achieve?

would the art of it dissapear or would it become even better?

would people still apprechiate the effort, or do you think there would be no more effort because you could import or draw any kind of image?

this is a serious issue for the future of strip generator, so please, share your oppinion!

  1. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | ASHA | 28.09.2007 10:33 I task that these two functions still stimulate more the creativity !!!
Naturally if I have understood English well
  2. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | BetGent | 28.09.2007 11:34 if bitmap import is available then it should be limited
perhaps limit the quantity of importable bitmaps (and the size)

also, i think that we should be able to create our own "actors"

ie allow me to save my space invader so i could import him anytime
    see linky

    http://escargot.stripgenerator.com/2007/09/26/invasion.html

i'd like to see more vector tools rather than an all out painting program
we might as well just use photoshop then

I don't want to see the nature of this site change too much

    -ben
  3. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zigmund | 28.09.2007 12:07 well all the functions would remain and the bitmapping would just be an extra thing. just for different crowds, which would be able to do all sorts of comics - all the limits would fall...

the question is if it would change the naration of this site to the point when it would become more or less spam. meaning we would have all colors and all media (from photos to printscreens) and it would become a cross-media thingie - all still in the concept of a comic ofcourse..

the negative thing is that the craft of doing a comic for hours till its perfect wouldnt be apprechiated as much..

still, i think we would gain a big deal of creativity...
  4. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zigmund | 28.09.2007 12:08 as for making own objects and saving them in own library - it's a great idea and will surely be done in the future - also i have an idea of trading or sharing your characters around the generator.
  5. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | rexxdelarocha | 28.09.2007 14:14 I love the "saving your own actors/objects" idea. In fact, I'll trade my firstborn for this feature :P
  6. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | dewfilms | 28.09.2007 14:58 I would say no to the importing bitmap images.
    1) Who knows what kinds of pictures people would upload. Family friendly or not family friendly.

2)If people could upload pictures, then all someone would have to do is trace over the picture. And easily pass it off as his/her own. Then some of the 'wow' factor of StripGenerator would be lost.

I say yes to saving your own objects/creations/characters. But I would have it to where you could email the person and ask permission to use his or her own creations.
  7. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Estoy | 28.09.2007 15:30 A big and fat NO to both of the ideas. If these two functions would be put into SG, then, there wouldn't be any point in even having the SG. It would just turn into a upload-fest where you could do anything. Even now, you can see, that it's not even a strip blog anymore, it's basically hundreds of masterpiece ˝paintings˝ made from circles and squares.
But if you MUST put it in, you should seperate the comics with these functions and without these functions into two groups, so that we can distinguish which is which.
  8. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | BetGent | 28.09.2007 15:51 wow, i think my strips just got called masterpieces =P

i only do these "paintings" while i think of something funny to pop into a comic strip...

suffice to say, my funny-bone is broken at the moment :(

    -Ben
  9. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | millefeuilles | 28.09.2007 16:04 I do agree with Estoy. What makes the originality of SG would faint definitively. I love the contraints made by the characters of SG; they're very stimulating and we haven't yet explore all their possibilities!
  10. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | BetGent | 28.09.2007 16:15 for me its about time... i could save alot of time if some of the things i want to do regularly can be replicated easily...

its the same reason why i argue for copy/paste functionality

i don't see the difference between spending an hour making 10 space invaders or making one in 5 mins then exporting as an actor to use later (or copy pasting it)

as for the bitmap images, thats why i argue for either number and size limitations... i mean... being limited to 3 20x20 pixel images surely wouldnt make a HUGE difference would it?

i really dont want the feel of this site to change, i do however want to make life easier for myself and others :)

If the site admins want to differentiate between art strips and comic strips then im fine with that too.
  11. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zigmund | 28.09.2007 16:24 maybe making sections for art, humour etc would be cool. there is tagging, yes, but it's not so useful.

but let's stick to this debate, i want to hear more pros and cons..
  12. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | BetGent | 28.09.2007 16:33 i am against an outright painting tool in the site tho zig :)
  13. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | mjeffery | 28.09.2007 16:52 NO 2 the idea of uploading images. It would completely destroy the creativity. If this feature was allowed, people could just get someone elses strip, then save it as a bitmap, then upload it.

Do not introduce this or there will be no point in the website!!!
  14. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | xideum | 28.09.2007 19:12 These two functions would make people whose strips are mostly drawings (people like me) obsolete. There just wouldn't be any point in spending hours making stuff out of circles and lines if someone with a graphics tablet and Adobe Illustrator can do it better and faster than you.

This wouldn't be good either for people whose strips are mostly humor with little drawing. It's already hard for them to get noticed.

  15. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Estoy | 28.09.2007 19:54 This site is already turning into a painting generator. What do you think will happen if you give us the power to upload our own pictures? Or even a drawing tool. Maybe a 20x20pixel image upload function wouldn't destroy the site, but anything past that definetly would. If you put in the function, we don't really need this site any more. It would just turn into another site, where you can show off with your photoshop paintings.
My idea: Simply seperate the two branches of ART and COMICS.
  16. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | 35sheep | 28.09.2007 21:06 Sorry Ziggy, but I don't like the idea either!!! Upload of bitmaps would ruin the whole idea of SG as a STRIP-generator, and a paint tool could too.

A library function could be interesting though ...

  17. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | imaginemichael | 29.09.2007 06:38 I'm with the "nay" crowd. There are so many amazing things that people are doing with what we have now, not much else is needed. Right now, the site challenges people to come up with more funny and creative things and I think that's where things really excel. I mean, xideum just drew a motherf'n Octopus, that was nuts. If everyone weren't forced to be more creative, we would miss out on a lot of the best work on here, I think. Tools to help the creativity like save functions and the previous undo addition are the way updates should be geared. Maybe adding another color every once in a while to "up" the level of creativity some without taking away the need to be creative in the first place. If I were creative, I could have thought up a shorter way to say all that, sorry.
  18. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Estoy | 29.09.2007 13:50 Yeah, colors could be a great way to give a boost to creativity.
  19. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Spigaw | 29.09.2007 13:52 About the bitmap uploading: I'm totally against this idea, it would kill StripGenerator.
About the drawing tool: it would be awesome, yes, but when I do my comics, I exactly know which characters I will use, which shapes, etc... But it is a good idea.
  20. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Spigaw | 29.09.2007 13:53 Oh, I agree with Xideum's point: ''...if someone with a graphics tablet and Adobe Illustrator can do it better and faster than you.''
If you don't add limits to your system, I think that it would lose its soul!
  21. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Spigaw | 29.09.2007 13:55 It would be cool to have a ''drawing section'' where we would create our own characters, in order to share them with the other users; as you said, some kind of a common library of shapes and characters. But, yes, I am totally against the bitmapping idea.
  22. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | BetGent | 29.09.2007 15:23 the big point for me is that IF bitmap imports are used then it should be limited...

I mean, maybe maybe instead have a texture fill tool with a very (and i mean *very*) limited quantity of textures to choose from.

well it's just a thought at the moment... let it stir around in my head a little first...
  23. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zigmund | 29.09.2007 15:53 if the bitmaps are introduced, it'll be all the way. or nothing.

but you all have a point though. seems that such features should be made for a new brand of stripgenerator..
  24. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Estoy | 29.09.2007 17:30 Slikgenerator or Picgenerator ;)
  25. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zigmund | 29.09.2007 17:47 you're underestimating the universal language of comics estoy...;)
  26. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | OliverStrip | 29.09.2007 18:00 StipGe is the better motor of imagination. Please don't kill it with bitmap images !
  27. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | atry | 29.09.2007 19:53 NO&NO
  28. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | gerdbonk | 30.09.2007 01:40 Adding image import and drawing tools will fundamentally change Stripgenerator. The "personality" of the strips will change (Zigmund's characters/objects will take a back seat), and I think also the community make-up will change.

If you foresee a path where Stripgenerator moves closer to being an application for serious comic artists, then image import and drawing are far, far less important than a save function.

The inability to save works-in-progress is the big limiter for me, as lately I have not been able to string together the couple hours needed to create and publish what I want. If I could work ten minutes here, fifteen minutes there, Jake and Lazlo would not have dwindled in frequency to one or two strips every week or so.

If you do not foresee such a development path, then I don't see where adding these tools enhances the current application. It opens it up to "anything goes" and I think you will then see the community deteriorate. Now, I understand this community is relatively small, and keeping it intact (with slow growth) may be less important to you than expanding the overall usage of your application.

Perhaps it's time for the development to fork: 1) a downloadable client piece (perhaps requiring a purchase) that combines saving, import, drawing etc. with quick upload of strips to a "pro" section of the site, and 2) the current online free tool, with its limitations and community intact.
  29. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zigmund | 30.09.2007 10:47 well put. seems that we need to create a completely new brand with those features, which will serve as a universal comics creation tool with no limits and keep this as it is and only improving it with functions that help to boost creativity in this maner.

    thanx for all your comments..
  30. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | BetGent | 30.09.2007 12:00 I'd like to hear Andraz' view on this debate...
ie, the things that he thinks will probably be implimented and the things that are possible / easy to impliment

so far its been all speculation and possibilities, i'd like to hear what is actually planned for the future :)

    -ben
  31. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Spunkn | 03.10.2007 04:37 Strip Generator is perfect right now, as long as you keep up with the new image packages, it's great.
  32. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Andraz | 03.10.2007 09:41 sorry guys, was on and off, so this is why I am replying so late..

A lot can be implemented from technical point of view, the problem is time and financial part of the whole thing, plus, even more important in my opinion, what do people want and does it serve its purpose to a brand.

And I totally like the overall opinions right now.
  33. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Horatius | 07.10.2007 17:33 I think one of the most interesting things about this site is how with a few changes, we can generate some very different characters, for the same stock character templates. I did two strips on "telling the kitties apart" for new comers to my strips, and I think it illustrates my point:

    http://horatius.stripgenerator.com/2007/09/21/telling-the-kitties-apart.html

    http://horatius.stripgenerator.com/2007/09/21/telling-the-kitties-apart-part-2.html

It's amazing to me that we can make such distinct "personalities" come alive with just a few changes.

  34. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | offthesquare | 10.10.2007 21:32 I'm in the less is more camp. The more restrictions, the more creative people can be. It's a pretty unique site at the moment, but being able to add our own visual content, rather than use the building blocks provided, seems a bit needless.
A draft save would be a useful improvement in functionality. As would being able to organise the blog - if anyone from outside comes to my blog they would be reading the latest strip first rather than the first strip first (I have a chronological strip). Be nice to have the option to switch the order.
  35. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | offthesquare | 14.10.2007 22:29 I've just lost another strip because I'm daft. I really would love draft save. I mean it.
  36. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | mjeffery | 20.10.2007 11:12 This has probably come up in the forum before, but I am wondering when the statistics page is going to have something on it. It seems a bit blank at the moment. I think it would be great to put the leading users in terms of views for the month on that page. It would be COOL!
  37. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Andraz | 23.10.2007 18:31 http://teblognik.stripgenerator.com/2007/10/23/striphone.html
    perhaps something like this?
  38. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | KhoNS | 25.10.2007 15:40 I'm usually skeptical about user's point of view.. Especially the whole 2.0 story just confirms that critical mass of users degenerates an "intellectual level" of an application.. I'm however more than pleased and thrilled about all of your feedback and this whole debate..

I love how this community is evolving and how everybody is able to understand and feel the concept behind stripgenerator which made this entire issue of new tools and your response completely homogeneous.

I'll do however have another question and i'll try to throw a bone, from my aspect of this evolutional step of stripgen..

How do you guys feel about limitation on developing your own style?
One could argue some of the pioneers here developed their style by creating complex drawings based on given shapes, but that is just one of the possible styles - i'm more trying to point out the issue of not being able to create your own drawing style, your own charachters, your own environments etc. so even if you have a great story to tell everybody, you are forced to do so with our visual language or. style if you want, not yours..

I think that this is very high price to keep stripgenerator (any thus every comic strip created with it) branded and "watermarked" with stripgenerators visual identity! It is possible to preserve the logic of giving every user same chances and possibilities and to keep this strip ecosystem visually homogeneous and ordered and yet empower users with another way of differentiate themselves from thousands of others. In this case strictly visually, but i'm certain that by providing you guys with a flexible and clever enough system will only invoke more creativity and new, subtile ways to stand out of crowd with your art.

What do you think? How do you feel about that?
  39. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | mjeffery | 26.10.2007 01:29 You have raised a good point here KhoNS.
I agree with all of it!
  40. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Reddick | 26.10.2007 16:18 Hello, it would be nice to have more objects, persons and shapes! I miss also colors.
  41. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | JacobDS | 28.10.2007 19:20 NO to both of the ideas. I think stripgenerator is fine as it is, and I agree with dewfilms. Family friendly or not pictures? REALLY bad idea.
  42. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Estoy | 29.10.2007 18:53 Oh, a COPY function wouldn't hurt. If you are making a lot of complex objects, that are the same it would help.
  43. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | JacobDS | 31.10.2007 19:35 true that. thats a good idea
  44. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | weatherhitme | 17.11.2007 14:50 It WOULD be nice if colors were added apart from blue (alpha) black and red. A drawing tool would be a great idea (in my opinion) because you cant make a REAL comic without drawing can you, unless its comp generated but still... Uploading bitmaps isnt such a gd idea, coz ppl could upload porn and sex scenes and with bitmaps then its not really a comic. I agree with estoy on the copy function, also a save thing coz i always need to re-make henry from my "The Adventures of Tom and Henry" series and its starting to get annoying.
  45. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | thePursuit | 20.11.2007 02:04 I haven't read all 44 comments, but I would really like to be able to save a strip in progress... I also liked the idea of being able to "import" a character that was created within the SG GUI.

As far as importing BMP... I think that can be too dangerous and not as fun. Drawing with mouse could be a little fun.

    Lew
  46. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | chris71 | 11.12.2007 16:53 It would be nice to save strips in progress, but NO to implements bitmaps or painting tools: creativity come out when you have limits to bypass not when you have all the freedom of the world!!!
  47. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Sen5e | 11.01.2008 18:23 Saving characters is the most important new feature to me. Bitmap import would be one way to quickly implement this feature and I bet it's the easiest.

I would rather have bitmap import now to save characters, than to have to wait for the properly implemented feature.

A drawing tool would be bonus!

  48. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Sen5e | 11.01.2008 18:24 Oh, and I would like to be able to save strips in progress as well.
  49. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | PsychoShoe | 20.01.2008 20:14 I think this whole thing should be moved more in to "make funny stuff" than "make stuff that looks pretty". So I'd say no to bitmaps.
  50. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Andraz | 23.01.2008 11:20 ok saving strips and reediting wont be avaliable any time soon. We changed philosophy because feature like that would cause so many problems that you just can imagine.

saving stuff as characters, something like that is coming in near future.
  51. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | offthesquare | 02.02.2008 11:23 Not read through all this, but how about being able to search by language?
  52. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | richoz | 03.02.2008 12:45 i say no to uploading bitmaps
    abstain about drawing with mouse

totally agree with saving stuffs as characters
  53. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | joel | 11.02.2008 01:12 My best wishes : searching by language : english version easy to do (to solve the language problem) ; a few more colors ; lines & curves with and without width variation ; an airplane (!) ; a possibility to import vectorial shapes ; points of the two right-most bubbles less espaced. For me no bitmaps (but why not mouse drawing)... No other wish. Many thanks for having created and shared this wonderful tool !
  54. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | neu3no | 12.02.2008 14:21 DON'T CHANGE THE NATURE OF SG IF PLAN UPGRADE!

Colors given to bribed users is great thing. Separate editor for making new characters would be nice. Third shelf for those new characters would be nice. This would be good option because it will keep same SG, and guys who are making this can make easier make new thing and add it, rather than redoing this which is proved working and reliable.

    NOTE!
Giving that advanced options to bribed users adds that something to SG.
  55. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | 35sheep | 12.02.2008 16:52 Yeah - how about dropping the @lpha-thing (sorry @-guys - you know I love u!!!) - it doesnt work anyway: it's the same 4 or 5 every month.

In stead give the two "bribed of today" (or maybe 3 or 4 if @ is out) a 'gift' the following day. That would give more people the opportunity.

As to other features: Seeing what GREAT work people can do with a limited set of tools is - to me - what SG is all about. So: Not too many tools please!!!
  56. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | iluvbobtp | 20.02.2008 16:32 Importing bitmaps would make sg a hell of a lot slower, though. And frankly, It would destroy alot of the art form. I think being able to have a character creator would be great, though. Put toether a few shapes a being or two, and you have your own series! It would also help neochimik a ton. And probably NinjaMan, too.
  57. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Raspotin | 23.03.2008 21:25 I think that the function of importing and exporting bitmaps wont work...
The strips would be MUCH different one of the other, etc...

The "Painter" function would ruin the Stripgenerator image!!
The strips would be MUCH MUCH MUUUUUUUCH different one of the other!!

But i really agree about saving humans/beings/objects/shapes/bubbles!!
We could have a whole library for personal use in these topics that i mentionated!

And... Please... No more colors! Green and Yellow arent much SG style, so just imagine how would be with purp, pink, etc.!!
  58. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zetsubou | 29.03.2008 07:56 personal library and inplug library for saving vectors~!
  59. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Zigmund | 29.03.2008 09:32 yes, own character library will be in (not so soon though) and bitmap importing and hand drawing will not be. well actualy drawing with basic shapes will be a bit easier, but we think that will help a lot..

thanx for your oppinions, it helped much!
  60. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Raspotin | 29.03.2008 14:27 WE thank you, Zigmund! ;D
  61. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | DeaconBarry | 31.03.2008 17:38 What about a semi-circle?
  62. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Raspotin | 31.03.2008 21:39 What you mean, DeaconBarry?
  63. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | DeaconBarry | 01.04.2008 23:29 Half a circle. Good for shading up to a straight line and a curve.
  64. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Raspotin | 02.04.2008 02:34 Hm... But i think its easy to do it! Its just make a circle and put a white shape in half of it... Is that what you want??
  65. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | DeaconBarry | 02.04.2008 19:13 Not quite. The shape is useful for blanking out the bottom half of a face, so you can change the expression.
  66. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | DeaconBarry | 02.04.2008 19:39 I've done a strip to explain what I mean.
  67. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Raspotin | 02.04.2008 20:27 Yes, maybe we should need that, but not now... The @lpha users problem is driving everyone mad...
  68. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | 35sheep | 03.04.2008 11:09 not me ...
  69. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Raspotin | 03.04.2008 21:52 Yep... But it was! Spellcaster got @lpha, dewfilms dont got... Much confuse things happened!
  70. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | natthecat | 16.04.2008 23:34 Mabe we should have paint tool for all strips or just sunday ;P
  71. re: NEW SG FUNCTIONS DEBATE | Bombenwilli | 25.05.2008 10:56 The only thing that i want in SG is a simple line drawing tool. Scaling and turning shapes to draw lines is too much work.

Scalable text would be cool, too. That would make it possible to work with symbols.
